Last week we welcomed Freya to Natures Way Foods as part of her work experience week. Freya joined the Category & Innovation team and was briefed with the task of creating her very own food to go product for summer 2019. Here’s Freya’s account of a week at NWF.
“I chose Natures Way Foods for my week's work experience because I thought that it would be a great opportunity to learn about many types of jobs in the workplace and to experience a business environment.”
“I was introduced to Hannah in the Communications team who explained to me the Natures Way Foods story and how each department is involved in the business. After this, I was fortunate enough to go on a Fruit Factory tour. I was shown the process of packaging and preparing the fruit - it was amazing to see! Next, I met Rosie, an Auditor, who was giving a technical induction on Food Safety. I learnt about the processes and factors they consider to make sure that what they produce is safe and hygienic.
At the beginning of the week I was able to meet one of the Development Chefs, Dan. I was given the task of creating my own salad that could be sold in the summer of 2019. He talked about what he does in his job and told me what I need to consider when creating my salad. This meant that I spent the rest of the day doing some market research for my product by looking at Pinterest and Instagram as well as industry websites to see what is on trend."
"On Wednesday, I went out with one of the NPD Project Managers and the Communications team on some visits to see the Natures Way Foods products in store. We visited Pret a Manger for lunch and talked through the process of creating and producing a new product for a customer.
The Process team took me to the Daily Quality Assessment where they assess the quality of the products over their shelf life against the Customer specifications. After this I went into the development kitchen and created my salad, the dressing and even labelled my product! I then sat with the Finance team to work out how much the product would cost."
"On Friday I presented my Food to Go product to the Communications team, Sales and New Product Development to explain why I’d chosen my summer product. I named my vegan salad ‘Sunshine Quinoa, Avocado and Beetroot’ and it was targeted for a high end retailer."
"My week at Natures Way is something I will always remember. The opportunities and the fun I had was incredible and I feel so fortunate to have had such a great week and meet amazing people too. It outstands me how much I learnt throughout my week at Natures Way and I will bring back with me so many skills I developed and a brand new confidence that I never thought I had! I could not have asked for a better week and will always remember the opportunities, skills and laughs I experienced at Natures Way.”
